GENABELLE

Founded by Dr. Conan Park, a practicing dermatologist with a passion for advancing skin health, GENABELLE is a K-dermatology skincare brand that is working to make professional-grade skincare a part of everyday life. Originally born of Dr. Park’s desire to help patients recover faster from post-clinical skincare procedures and laser treatments, the brand’s signature ingredient, which they have helped pioneer the use of in topical applications, is PDRN: fragments of DNA extracted from salmon that have a powerful restorative effect on skin of all types. Committed to safety, transparency, and extensive quality-testing, their goal is simple yet powerful: to address the root causes of skin concerns and promote healthy, beautiful skin for all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PDRN?

PDRN (or Polydeoxyribonucleotide) is made up of short, biologically active DNA chains, typically between 50 and 1500kDa in molecular weight, that help to stimulate tissue repair. Originally discovered in and extracted from human placenta in the field of regenerative medicine, the dermatology industry now typically uses PDRN derived from salmon milt (salmon sperm), which research has found to very closely mimic human DNA. Vegan alternatives to PDRN are also used in the cosmetics industry, made from botanicals such as Green Tea and Rose.

How does PDRN work?

PDRN works at a cellular level to improve skin condition. Penetrating deep into skin (thanks to its low molecular weight), it acts as a biological agonist for the skin’s A2A adenosine receptors, binding to them and activating them. A2A adenosine receptors promote angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) and enhance the activity of fibroblasts, the skin’s collagen-producing cells. They also control anti-inflammatory responses. PDRN therefore helps to boost skin firmness, soften fine lines and wrinkles, speed up wound healing, and improve oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin, establishing the foundations for long-term skin health. Because of its healing and rejuvenating properties, PDRN is especially helpful for treating dull, mature, sensitive, and irritable complexions, though its high biocompatibility with human skin makes it suitable for use on all skin types.

Can you use PDRN with Retinol?

Yes, PDRN can be safely combined with Retinol in the same skincare routine – in fact, PDRN’s regenerative properties make a natural complement to Retinol’s own ability to stimulate skin cell turnover, especially in anti-ageing skincare regimens. While Retinol’s acceleration of skin’s natural turnover cycle can cause irritation as the topmost layer of skin becomes thinner, PDRN’s soothing, wound-healing properties help to counter this side effect.

As always, however, it’s important to introduce both Retinol and PDRN into your skincare routine gradually. Patch-test new products before incorporating them fully into your routine, and make sure to monitor your skin for irritation as you continue use.

When should you use PDRN?

PDRN can be safely applied either as part of your morning routine or your evening routine, although research indicates that evening application may be more effective, given that skin cell regeneration is most active during sleep.

You may wish to consider the other ingredients in your PDRN product when deciding when to use it. For example, GENABELLE’s VITA Toning Ampoule also contains capsules infused with Vitamin C, which works synergistically with sunscreen to protect skin from oxidative damage. As such, you may find applying this product during your morning routine is most effectively beneficial for your skin.
